A take-home version of the celebrated 2003 Woody Guthrie tribute tour, this outstanding double-disc release is filled with covers of, dedications to and songs inspired by Oklahoma folk hero Woody Guthrie, all performed live.
The “Ribbon of Highway, Endless Skyway” tour was organized by Austin, Texas, singer/songwriter Jimmy LaFave, the disc’s producer, who contributes several songs to the album, including LaFave’s live staple “Down in Oklahoma Hills,” as well as a stellar take on Guthrie’s poem “Deportee.”
Several well-known folk performers like Eliza Gilkyson, Ellis Paul, Slaid Cleaves, Michael Fracasso and Guthrie’s granddaughter Sara Lee Guthrie share the mic in a collective version of the classic “This Train Is Bound for Glory.” The group also joins for “This Land Is Your Land,” “Lonesome Valley” and “Going Down the Road.”
The live recordings sound great and, most notably, the disc is narrated by red dirt legend and recent Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame inductee Bob Childers.
